By Noah de la Portilla, Eighth Grader Every December, one of the biggest art fairs in the world, Art Basel, comes to Miami. This year, iPrep’s eighth graders had the privilege of going to Wynwood Walls to see the extravagant and breathtaking art pieces. As one of the 8th graders myself, I can account for the amazing experience. About the Wynwood Walls Owned by the Goldman family, Wynwood Walls is nestled in Wynwood, Miami, and is where street art comes to life. People are allowed to enter the building and enjoy the marvelous art with no fee. Every year for Art Basel, artists from all around the world are hired to paint murals in the Wynwood Walls. It features some of the most well-known street artists in the world, like Tomokazu Matsuyama, Tristan Eaton, and Ron English. A substantial amount of murals are replaced, but many of them are reused for the next year. The 8th graders were lucky enough to see the artists working on their masterpieces and also some finished murals. Street art is not only meant to entertain people, but also to send out inspirational messages. At times, the artist can make political statements through their artwork. This is a mural in the Wynwood Walls called American Power that was designed and painted by Tristan Eaton. It portrays American women of different ethnicities against the colors of the US flag. showing respect to all the women of America.
