This past academic school year is filled with great memories, countless opportunities, and difficult decisions. As I write my last Editorial for iPrep Academy, I have decided to continue my education at Stetson University to major in Sociology. I am one of four who have attended iPrep since the school opened as the Primary Learning Center in 2008. During my time here, I have watched the school grow and I have been involved in many activities. One of my proudest is the Co-Editor of the Phoenix Flyer in Creative Writing 3 and 4 Honors.
I entered Creative Writing 3 Honors as a junior hoping to refine my writing style and build confidence in my work. As a junior in the class, I worked with some of the seniors who edited my articles and gave me advice. Having these seniors give so generously of their time to improve my writing and mentor me is what really pushed me to becoming a better writer. The opportunity to work one-on-one with the seniors gave me great insight on what to expect for the upcoming school year and how the class would function without them in my senior year.

However, as my responsibility grew, as the Co-Editor of the Phoenix Flyer and as 1 of 4 seniors in the class, I focused my column to bridge the monthly #ValuesMatter from Miami Dade County Public Schools, relating it to a current event. Like my predecessors, I mentored the younger staff writers, guiding them along their writing journey. I gave them insight into what to write about and how to become better writers. One skill to ensure that the younger staff writers become successful is #Integrity. According to the Mirriam Webster dictionary, integrity is the “firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values”. While guiding the new writers on their writing journey, it is vital that they be honest with themselves, their topic, and their writing.

My time spent as a member of the Phoenix Flyer has greatly impacted me at iPrep and has allowed me opportunities to grow as a writer and become a mentor, helping my peers hone their writing skills. I will forever be grateful for the opportunities and memories that I have developed in the past two years as a student in Creative Writing.
