By Sabrina Beguiristain, Senior As a new dawn welcomes the new year, hope is rising from our darkest days. The Time’s Up movement is a positive step forward to achieving the restored hope of 2017. Initiated on January 1st, 2018, Time’s Up rapidly sparked a national progress for people who are victims of sexual assault, gender discrimination, and sexual harassment.
Created by a series of several meetings, the Time’s Up campaign was formed by several women actors including Shonda Rhimes, Ashley Judd, Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon, and America Ferrera. These women united with social activists such as Tarana Burke (#MeToo creator) and Marai Larasi (executive director of Imkaan) to develop a central purpose to the movement. Pledged in the New Year, an array of diverse women from different areas of the workforce gathered together to emphasize the gender mistreatment lingering in society. Due to claims of unfair male advantages, harassment, and abuse in many workplaces (ranging from the entertainment to agriculture to business industries), the Time’s Up movement’s goal is to end gender discrimination in the workforce. However, before the Time’s Up movement was created, in November, a total of 700,000 agricultural women workers, from the Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, united together to pledge their support to end sexaul assualt alongside actors. For those who aren’t familiar with the Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, it is an organization that aims to protect female farm workers from violence and sexual harassers. The Alianza Nacional de Campesinas received massive recognition for their brave letter revealing the brutal truths of sexual harassment impacting women factory workers. They influenced the Time’s Up movement’s purpose of aiding women not only in Hollywood, but in every part of the world. Therefore, as stated earlier, sexual harassment is no longer seen as an entertainment issue, but a universal issue that everybody has witnessed or experienced. As a means of raising awareness for the Times Up Movement, hundreds of women and men arrived at the Golden Globes dressed in black to show solidarity for the victims affected by sexaul harrasment. Many actors from the Time’s Up movement invited inspiring women, such as, Ai-jen Poo, who is director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, was Meryl Streep's plus one. Actor, Michelle Williams, was also accompanied by #MeToo creator, Tarana Burke, who spoke about the significant impact it is to break silence about sexaul harrasment. During the Golden Globes, the Time’s Up movement was introduced to the world by our televisions and computers. Upon winning the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Oprah Winfrey delivered a passionate speech addressing the Time’s Up movement’s purpose of encouraging victims of sexual assault to speak out and break silence. Created for present and future generations, the Time’s Up movement is changing society one story at a time. As more brave women and men speak out about harassment, discrimination, and sexual assault, the Time’s Up movement is striving to uncover the causes through activism and bring new effects where change will bring equity and end discrimination and abuse.
