By Samuel Isenberg, Senior Pi Day has earned its title as one of most anticipated yearly events at iPrep. Students from all grade levels look forward to festivities hosted each year by iPrep’s Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta. But what is it that makes this day so special to iPrep students? What is it that makes Pi Day so important to the school? The celebration of math? The pieing of teachers?
Before the birth of Pi Day at iPrep, there were no exciting annual events to look forwa9rd to throughout the year. Students would go about their academics daily, with no break in sight. However, one teacher sought to change this cycle of repetition, and offer students a well earned day of fun. “I thought of hosting Pi Day events because iPrep needed something fun,” claimed Mrs. Hauser, who hosted the first Pi Day at iPrep in 2012. She adds, “There were no fun activities throughout the year, and I wanted to spread the love of math across the school while doing something fun.” History aside, what is it makes Pi Day such an important day to iPrep? Current president of Mu Alpha Theta, senior Tiffany Dang believes that “The celebration of the Pi Day and all things math is integral to iPrep’s character as a school where interactivity and academia go hand-in-hand.” Mrs. Hauser also agrees, “Because its fun, students get to pie the teachers! It's an opportunity for students to have a good time at iPrep outside of academics.” Every year, Pi Day offers exciting events that have become the favorite of students and faculty alike. The most iconic of these events is Pie-the-Teachers, where students enter a raffle for a chance to pie their favorite (or in some cases least favorite) teachers. Everybody is able to find an event they love. “Personally, I love naming the digits of pi,” said Tiffany. “The seemingly superhuman ability of our student body to recite so many numbers never fails to astound me; though, I’m pretty sure the crowd favorite event is Pie-the-Teacher. That’s substantially entertaining to me as well.” This year, because Pi-Day falls on an Early Release Day, March 14th, the SGA and Mu-Alpha Theta are teaming up to host “Sπike it Up.” Senior Vice President Javier Pujols explains that 9-11AM will be for sports and activities and the proceeds from concessions will benefit the students because it will go to SGA.” And, from 11AM-12:20PM, the day will turn to the fun activities of Mu Alpha Theta. What makes Pi Day such a special event at iPrep is its mass appeal. The event is able to hold a different, special meaning to each student who participates. Each year creates new precious memories for each student and faculty member, especially those who end up on the wrong side of a pie to the face.
