By: Camila Crespo, Senior The Corona Virus originated in Wuhan City, Hubei province, China. The first cases of infection were seen by people who live near or were customers of a fish market in Wuhan. Health specialists believe the virus first spread from animals-to-people and then from person-to-person. According to the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), “coronaviruses are a large family of viruses found in both animals and humans.” They vary from cold symptoms to serious diseases such as Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The symptoms of this new coronavirus include cough, fever, and shortness of breath. Some infectees show no symptoms until several days after contact with the virus. Officials have concluded that the virus takes about a period of 2 to 14 days of incubation time before symptoms begin to appear. As a result, individuals who have been in contact with infected individuals are quarantined and tested for the virus as a safety measure. The coronavirus doesn't have a cure or preventative vaccine as of now, but symptoms can be treated and assisted with medical equipment like respiratory machines. Due to its violent spread throughout the country, the corona virus has effectively quarantined China. China has built a 1,000-bed hospital in a surprising 10 days to contain those infected. As of February 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) has officially named the coronavirus COVID-19, short for “coronavirus disease 2019” as an attempt to fight stigma and racism online. Since its discovery, the virus has spread to other places around the world such as the United States and Australia. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 78, 811 cases confirmed globally and the death toll has risen to 2,445 in China and outside of mainland China, there have been 17 deaths. To continue, countries like South Korea and Italy are facing extreme surges of new cases of the virus. South Korea has become the second most infected place after China with 833 cases of coronavirus. Korean Officials say that the spike in numbers came from an outbreak centered around the Shincheonji religious group. According to CNN, “Some 300 members of the group have tested positive for the virus, and more than 9,000 practitioners have been put into self-isolation while they are tested by health authorities.” Furthermore, Italy imposes quarantine restrictions as the country experiences the largest outbreak in Europe. According to the Washington Post, “an eruption of more than 150 cases in Italy prompted officials on Sunday to lock down at least 10 towns, close schools in major cities and cancel sporting events and cultural touchstones, including the end of the Venice carnival.” Officials in Italy are working to slow the spread of the virus by telling the public to remain home and obey safety regulations for the prevention of infection. The coronavirus is still an active situation that continues to grow and change. We can all take preventive measures to make sure we can keep ourselves healthy. The CDC recommends getting a flu vaccine since it is flu season and suggests taking action to help stop the spread of germs.
