As the application season for college has finally come to end, the “season” for applying for scholarships, summer programs, and even summer jobs has begun for more than just seniors. The many programs and organizations will most likely ask you to write a statement about yourself, your goals, future plans, or a challenge that you’ve faced.
This self-reflection is not an easy process, in fact it has been the most difficult form of writing for me in my entire high school career. If you have writer’s block about where to begin, below is an example of that scholarship about my “Goals and Aspirations.” I also explain my experiences, academically and through internshi, and more that would make me seem like a suitable candidate for any scholarship. If you have any questions, you can send an email to me at [email protected]

My journey in highschool has been a relentless pursuit of excellence inside and outside of the classroom. I took Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment classes not only to follow the spirit of inquiry to my passions, but also to challenge myself and develop the ambition and initiative needed to create reform in the real world. My extensive community service reflects my dedication to my potential. My Vice Presidency in iPrep’s Key Club, active membership in National Honor Society and National English Honor Society, experience as a panelist for Safe Schools South Florida’s GSA Leadership Summit, and a near decade of service as a Girl Scout of Tropical Florida are some examples of mediums through which I’ve contributed to my school community and beyond. Whether as a writer for Miami On Sight and FIU’s Jumpstart Journal or as a mentor to younger students, dedicating my time to a cause and my studies has shown me the value of leadership and the importance of creating substantial change for those around me. |
My academic journey thus far has taught me to be understanding, patient, and proactive, but I know that graduating High School is only the beginning of my journey to my aspirations. At university, I plan to double major in Business Administration and African-American Studies, while potentially studying Art History and/or English as minors. The synthesis of these subjects will provide a foundation for a creative career showcasing the experiences and achievements of Queer people of color around the globe.
Additionally, as The Editor in Chief for the Phoenix Flyer, the iPrep Academy School Newspaper, and an Intern for a Fashion intern for Pangea Kali Virga, I’ve developed an interest in learning the foundations to create a fashion and art publication, and learning more about the art of curation, in order to open my own Art Gallery. Overall, my passions for art and storytelling synthesize in creating a space or publication that will nurture the talent and creativity in others. The core of my ambition is to give back to my community and to improve it with art, fashion, literature, and the lessons that they teach us about the world.
With a university education, I hope to create something that touches people, expands discourse on racial, social, and environmental justice, and inspires others to pursue excellence in their lives and communities. |
I wouldn’t have come to these conclusions without participating in extracurriculars as a leader and taking on academic challenges. In challenging myself, I found many interests which developed into passions for the future. My internship has also played a pivotal role in this process by exposing me to the fashion industry and art-related hobbies, two things that I would have never imagined myself partaking in before sophomore year.

Accepting responsibility for activities and endeavors that will ultimately benefit you may guide you towards excellence and success beyond what you think is possible.
