By Javier Pujols and Sarah Zeleya, Seniors iPrep offers a variety clubs and honor societies that allow students to become engaged in their school community. Club rush will be taking place on September 13th during lunch. Each club will have information available for anyone that is interested. Code Art Sponsor: Ms. Hauser President: TBD Code Art works to inspire girls to code through the use of art. Girls from middle school through high school are eligible to join. Members must be prepared to participate in competitions, attend field trips, and listen to guest speakers. The meetings are held after school on Wednesdays from 3:00PM to 4:00PM. Gay Straight Alliance Sponsor: Ms. Keller President: Aimet Ruiz Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) works to spread awareness regarding issues the LGBTQ+ community faces. Additionally, the GSA spreads the idea of inclusiveness and the idea that our school is a “Safe Space.” Students from grades 9th through 12th are welcome to join. There are many events throughout the school year such as Pride, Ally Week, Mock-Weddings, and Day of Silence. Meetings are held Mondays during lunch. Health Information Project Sponsor: Ms. Pedroso President: Aimet Ruiz The club specializes on informing freshmen on health related topics that oftentimes may be overlooked or considered taboo. Board members attend trainings and then educate the PHEs (Peer Health Educators); Junior and Seniors are welcome to join HIP as PHEs. Major events include Freshman classroom presentations and HIP Day. PHEs are expected to stay after school and use class time to educate the underclassmen. Model United Nations Sponsor: Ms. Gelber President: Bianca Vucetich Model United Nations (MUN) focuses on teaching debating and public speaking skills to prepare members for MUN competitions. Anyone from middle through high school (grades 6th-12th) are welcome to join. Events throughout the year are held at University of Florida, Miami-Dade College, University of Miami and Florida International University. The meetings are held twice a month on Tuesdays, Wednesdays are optional MUN practices. Mu Alpha Theta Sponsor: Ms. Hauser Co-Presidents: Tiffany Dang and Sara Shedroff Mu Alpha Theta (MAT) works to promote scholarship in mathematics and establishing math as an integral part of high school. The club also focuses on helping students that may not have an affinity for math by providing tutoring. Students who are passionate about math, want to pursue a field within mathematics, and wish to spread their love and passion for math while integrating it into their everyday life are advised to join. As for most honor societies, MAT has requirements to join: students must have taken a math beyond Algebra 2 and must have a 3.0 GPA in the math classes. Major club events include Pi Day and Math Talk Series. Meetings are held on the first and third Monday of every month during lunch. National Honor Society Sponsor: Ms. Muller President: Lindsey Greene NHS focuses on forming a community of high achieving students that are joined in the pursuit of bettering their communities by performing volunteer activities. The club members follow the principles of the four pillars—character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The club welcomes all 10th - 12th grade students, who have achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher. Members are expected to complete at least 2 hours of community service weekly, either by becoming a Teacher’s Pet for Upper or Lower School (formerly known as PLC) teachers. NHS’ major events include Treats for Troops, the Toy Drive, Blood Drive, Dr. Seuss Read-ins, the Harvest Festival, and Teacher Appreciation Week. Students part of NHS are expected to meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month during lunchtime. National English Honor Society Sponsor: Ms. Keller President: Olivia Ruiz National English Honor Society (NEHS) focuses to promote literacy and a passion for English. Students must have a 3.1 GPA in English and overall a 3.0. There are many events held throughout the school year such as the Miami Book Fair, poetry slams, library card drive and poetry workshops. Meetings are held during lunchtime. Phoenix Gears (Robotics) Sponsor: Mr. Palladino President: Catherine Padilla iPrep’s Robotics Team, the Phoenix Gears, teaches its members about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through designing and building a robot that can compete against opponents. Members of the Phoenix Gears participate in robotic competitions between other schools (FIRST Tech Challenge). Students who are in grades 8-12 are welcome to join. Major events are the FIRST competitions, which are held on Saturdays, and community service events. Meetings are after school on Tuesdays (3-4) and Thursdays (3-5). Speech & Debate Sponsor: Ms. Muller President: Nicholas Suarez Speech and Debate prepares students to compete in speech and debate competitions. Students in grades 7th through 12th are able to join. Major events include Public Forum Debate, Lincoln Douglas, Mock Congress, Oratory, and Interp events. Meetings are held every Thursday from 3:00PM to 4:00PM. Student Government Association Sponsor: Mr. Sultz President: Julio Rodriguez Student Government Association (SGA) specializes in shaping the students’ experience where they are highly active in sponsoring and organizing activities throughout the school year. Students from grades 9 through 12 are allowed to join. However, aside from Freshman Senator, board positions are reserved to 10th grade on. Major club events include Hoop It Up (United Way Campaign), the Video Game Tournament (United Way Campaign), Homecoming, Spike It Up, and Field Day. Make sure to pay attention to school-wide forms passed out by SGA. Meetings occur on Tuesdays during lunchtime. Women of Tomorrow
Sponsor: Ms. Pedroso President: N/A Women of Tomorrow educates bright female students on college, mental health, and financial literacy through mentorship and guest speakers. Students are selected by Ms. Pedroso to attend meetings once a month at 9:30 in the cafeteria. Throughout the year the students are taken on college campus tours and a Health and Wellness Symposium.
