By: Camila Lopez, Junior Miami is a city rich with affordable and free cultural experiences provided by many local organizations, websites, and our own government’s cultural divisions. From sport lessons to concerts, the citizens of Miami have a lot of variety when it comes to entertainment. According to Melanie Rodriguez, iPrep Alum and Program Coordinator at Culture Shock Miami, “Ensuring that there is affordable access to the arts, especially for youth, is vital to ensuring not only the personal growth of an individual but the collective growth of society. Introducing youth to the arts allows them to recognize the importance of their voices and stories. Making the arts affordable allows for new groups of people to develop an appreciation for the arts in addition to the affluent groups that the arts have typically been dominated by.” https://miamionthecheap.com This website’s slogan: “Because it’s about thriving not just surviving,” is a perfect description of why people look for affordable events. Miami On The Cheap is a great resource for all types of events, updating daily. The website has different categories such as: Entertainment and the Arts, Attractions and Museums, Sports and Rec, Food and Drink, Hotels and Hostels, and Travel and Exploring. One great activity for teens is the food truck gathering at Tropical Park, which takes place every fourth Friday of the month from 5:30 to 10:30 pm. https://cultureshockmiami.com Culture Shock Miami, “The audience development program of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs,” targets an audience of 13-22 year olds, and they offer $5 tickets to different local experiences. Recently, the list included tickets to the Screen Dance Festival, Mamma Mia at the Actor’s Playhouse, A Star is Born: The Concert at the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center, and Miami City Ballet’s I’m Old Fashioned. https://www.nws.edu/events-tickets/wallcast-concerts-and-park-events/ Imagine putting down a picnic blanket on the expansive grass field in the SoundScape Park, staring up at an immense “7,000 square foot projection wall.” That is what an audience experiences at a WALLCAST, free projections of the live classical performances at the New World Center. The WALLCAST concerts, hosted by the New World Symphony, happen once or twice a month. To find the complete list, check out the website. Another recurring event at the park is the SoundScape Cinema Series. Different movies are played on the wall of the New World Center building every Wednesday, and anyone is welcome to watch free of charge. https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/bill-baggs-cape-florida-state-park Located in the nearby paradise of Key Biscayne, the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park is the perfect place to visit. Go biking, rollerblading, hiking, swimming, fishing, and much more. The Cape Florida Lighthouse, as well as the Lighthouse Cafe, and surrounding beaches are in the park. The entrance fee to the park is $8 per vehicle. http://www.bayfrontparkmiami.com/YogaClasses.html Who isn’t in need of some exercise and zen? Miami also offers affordable yoga classes. The classes take place in either Bayfront Park, Maurice A. Ferré Park, or Jose Marti Park. Each class is either specified as free or by donation, and registration for classes is on a “first come, first serve basis”. Check out the website for the full schedule and class locations! All you need to bring is a yoga mat, water bottle, and towel. https://www.skywardkites.com/kite-festivals/
This place is perfect for the people who used to love going to the beach on a windy day to fly their kites on the shore. Located right off of Haulover Beach, Skyward Kites hosts all types of kite-themed events for families. Their upcoming event is the 2020 Kite Days Festival on February 15, 16, and 17th. Open daily, they encourage people to come and eat, fly a kite, picnic, and take in the view of the Haulover Sand Bar on their big grass field.
