By Sabrina Beguiristain, Senior We are all bestowed a name at birth, but as we grow into individual beings, we become our own name that expresses who we truly are. Inspired by Marilyn Nelson’s poem, “Moonlily,” I wrote a poem about my self-given name and how my name transforms me into a world where music is limitless to my ear.
During high school, I’ve grown to learn that we are always changing and experiencing new moments in our lives. When I began high school, I believed people are grown to become one specific thing, but I realized that we create ourselves to reach the limitless heights of our own dreams. Now that I am graduating, this poem serves to express that I am embarking on an independent journey that I will embrace change rather than escape from it. "Stellarosa" When all things seem to disappear, my name is Stellarosa, and I hear all things. I hear a distant train screeching to stop. The rains faint strokes against our wooden roof. If only the growls of thunder can sing, the strikes of lightning brush the sky with paint. An alluring symphony of free grace. My soul twinkles with each constellation and heaven does not seem far anymore. What colors that speak to me as I dream. A fruitful collection of sounds I sing. My opera show for one gleeful guest. I softly sing as I come back to now. The rosa paint washed away from my cheek.
