Values Matter: #Respect

#Respect. A word that is often used but not so often integrated into our daily lives. As defined by The Cambridge Dictionary, respect is the “politeness, honor, and care shown toward someone or something that is considered important”. People tend to be disrespectful without even realizing it. Remember that time when you were texting on your phone while your teacher explained the homework assignment? Or how about when you threw that pencil when you got frustrated? Even something as simple as talking out of turn can be perceived as disrespectful.

It is important to note that #Respect is an essential quality in a person’s personal and professional life. Several professional relationships are built upon respect and hard work. Being respectful could possibly allow someone a promotion or a salary increase. It could also strengthen relationships with friends and family members and, as a result, make you closer. Giving someone respect will most likely result in receiving respect as well.
Growing up in Miami, not from Hispanic parents, has allowed me to have a profound #Respect for all the Hispanic culture in South Florida. September 15- October 15 is Hispanic Heritage month, and although I am not Hispanic myself, much of the culture and life has impacted my day to day activities. Some examples of this include listening to Bad Bunny on the radio, eating Cuban food for family dinners, and taking Flamenco dance classes. I have even gone as far as taking three years of Spanish classes at my school and volunteering a week in the Dominican Republic over the summer in order to better immerse myself with the language, life, and beliefs. Surrounded by Hispanic culture has made me more open-minded and learn the value of different lifestyles.
Moreover, going to iPrep for the past 13 (nearly 14) years has allowed me to build a connection with many of the teachers and staff. Because of my time here I have developed a deep sense of #Respect for the Phoenix Flyer. Being privileged enough to have an insider view of the creation and production of The Phoenix Flyer, I have learned just how much effort and time goes into each and every monthly edition. From writing each article, to trying to find out how it should be formatted and laid out is more tricky than it seems.
In fact, this year the writers and staff of the Phoenix Flyer are excited to share their new articles and columns for the 2022-2023 school year. August and September have been a defining couple of weeks for our authors, as they figure out their passions, which translates into what they will (sometimes) write about.
#Respect is a characteristic that we should all practice on a day to day basis. Next time you read The Phoenix Flyer, remember to be respectful of the authors, editors, and staff that have spent their time and energy to put it together. Don’t forget that what goes around, comes back around! |
