Well, one effective way to stop pondering over these questions and start making the most out of your high school experience is to participate in writing contests EARLY in your high school career. For one, most contests offer phenomenal awards and scholarship opportunities, which means that finalists often have a gratifying and fulfilling experience competing in them. Not to mention, finalists who win scholarships have the chance to avoid the horrifying threat of financial debt in college. Compared to other extracurricular activities, contests are also free of charge and only require a bit of patience, meaning that everyone has the potential to participate. There are also over several hundreds of essays to choose from, guaranteeing that every person has the opportunity to find an interesting topic! Although some students pursuing STEM careers may reason that competing in contests directed more towards english majors is a waste of their time, the truth is that writing is an essential component of every single profession, regardless of whether it is based on mathematics or literature. Thus, every single individual benefits from participating in writing contests. To top this all off, partaking in several contests is considered an exceptional extracurricular activity by most colleges, especially if one is regularly a finalist. Writing essays, poems, or short stories is a great way to not only explore compelling current issues, but also freely express one’s own opinions and thoughts about a topic that one may be passionate about. It goes without saying that one of the most difficult aspects of writing for competitions is completing the first draft. When an essay or short story is frustrating to compose, it is quite easy to assume that giving up would be for the best, especially since it isn’t for a grade.
