By Georgette Delosreyes, Senior Holocaust Remembrance Day, is a memorial day on April 12th commemorating the tragedy of the Holocaust that occurred during the Second World War. It’s an annual day of commemoration honoring the victims, survivors and rescuers of the Holocaust during the Nazi regime.
According to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, since 2010, the UN has designated specific themes for the annual commemorations that focus on topics such as collective experiences and universal human rights. The date marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and is meant to honor the victims of Nazism. The same resolution supports the development of educational programs to remember the Holocaust and to prevent further genocide. It memorializes the genocide that resulted in the death of nearly 6 million Jewish people by the Nazi regime and its collaborators.
