By Melanie Rodriguez, Senior, Editor in Chief As a teen performer and arts enthusiast, I have fallen victim to a lack of financially accessible cultural events for young audiences. Understanding the need for youth art exposure, I decided to look into programs that promote financially accessible cultural experiences. In order to expand my passion for the performing arts in conjunction with involvement in my community, this year I serve as a Student Advisor for Culture Shock Miami’s Student Advisory Board. Culture Shock Miami (CSM) is a program run by Miami Dade County’s Department of Cultural Affairs that promotes access to the arts for students ages 13-22 through the introduction of $5.00 tickets. With a valid student ID, students can purchase an additional $5.00 ticket for a guest of any age. These tickets provide access to a variety of cultural events such as music, dance, and theatre. This program partners with cultural centers and provides tickets to some of Miami’s most frequented places such as Frost Science, Perez Art Museum, and Zoo Miami as well as events such as the Coconut Grove Arts Festival. Also, tickets to grand productions such as musicals at the Actor’s Playhouse and Florida Grand Opera performances at the Adrienne Arsht Center are available through their partnerships. In addition to tickets from CSM’s cultural partners, Culture Shock Miami also produces its own shows. CSM has presented shows such as Yoli Mayor— a Miami native and America’s Got Talent contestant. I encourage everyone to attend these events and provide feedback of the experience for me to relay to the council. Additionally, if anyone is interested in joining the Student Council, please feel free to reach out to me; I am eager to answer any questions about the program.
