By Sarah Zeleya, Senior Art performances, events, and museums are places to experience--expand your knowledge on the world around you. Or, maybe you want to support artists in your favorite art genre. Tickets to attend cultural events, sometimes pricey, are quite difficult on the budget for a high school or college student. Sometimes, there is a lack of information-- high school aged students may not know what events are offered in Miami. For these reasons, Culture Shock Miami is available. See below for the great interview of The Miami Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs Cultural Projects Administrator, Mary-Margaret Dale, who co-administers Culture Shock. Make sure to check out the website here for future events that may be added! Some events in February to look for:
In an email interview, I asked Mary-Margaret Dale how Culture Shock impacts teens and young adults in Miami: How long have you been with Culture Shock?
I’ve been with Miami-Dade County’s Cultural Affairs and Culture Shock Miami for a little over 2 and a half years. What about the organization drew you to it? Culture Shock Miami is all about making the arts affordable and accessible for 13-22 year olds. I love that through our website, cultureshockmiami.com, 13–22 year olds can purchase tickets to hundreds of arts events, cultural organizations and museums for only $5. So essentially a Culture Shocker can get a $5 ticket to experience all types of dance, music, theater, film, visual arts and tons of other amazing experiences. We also promote free events for audiences of all ages which is a great way for families to experience the arts! How did the idea of Culture Shock originate? Culture Shock started 15 years ago when the Knight Foundation approached Miami-Dade County Dept of Cultural Affairs about creating a program to make tickets affordable for teens and young adults, similar to a program in New York called High 5 tickets to the arts. Culture Shock Miami was designed to make tickets affordable, to provide a website as a centralized source of arts and culture information, and to help encourage attendance by making a second $5 ticket available for purchase by a parent/guardian to help transport students to performances and museums. 15 years later the program has provided over 100,000 tickets to Culture Shockers. Where does the funding come from for the program? Culture Shock Miami is made possible through Miami-Dade County, the office of the Miami-Dade County Mayor, the Board of County Commissioners, the Cultural Affairs Council and the Department of Cultural Affairs. Tickets are made available through the generous contributions of the hundreds of Cultural organizations in Miami-Dade County. What does it do for the community? Culture Shock Miami’s mission is to build the audiences of the future. By providing affordable tickets and access to arts and culture, it provides a way for teens, young adults, and their friends and families to experience the rich cultural environment that Miami has to offer. We hope that they will continue enjoying the arts even when they age out of the program, and continue making it a part of their life. Sarah ZeleyaI have a tendency to binge watch TV shows and get lost on YouTube. Although pretty much Supernatural and Twenty One Pilots are my top picks. |
