Each February, Black History Month highlights the contributions made by African Americans to society and awareness of the struggles and adversities faced by these individuals. The celebration of such rich, deep history reminds Americans how Black culture has significantly shaped our nation, allowing us to progress as a society. From Katherine Johnson, a mathematician whose abilities made space travel possible; to Garrett Morgan, the inventor of the three-light traffic light; to Kamala Harris, the first Black, South Asian, and female Vice President of the United States; African American figures impact daily American life, emphasizing the need for Americans to commemorate such achievements and history.
At iPrep Academy, one of the yearly activities that the National English Honor Society (NEHS) engages their members is Black History presentations to underclassmen and middle school students of prominent Black figures and their significance to humanity. NEHS members create unique presentations discussing the individuals’ accomplishments and their influence on society.
This year, members presented to Ms. Pratt’s English Language Arts classes, Ms. Browne’s English Language Arts classes, Ms. Ahmed’s Leadership classes, Ms. Meschini’s science class, and Ms. Colon’s Civics class. The NEHS students aim is to educate, connect, and interact with the students offering a broader and fun understanding of Black history.
