By Alberto Grand, Senior and Nia Nelson, Junior Left to right: Brianna (First place Science winner) and Amelie Ise (First Place English Winner) This is the first time that iPrep hosted the Middle School Poetry Piano Slam, introduced by the Middle School English and Science Teachers, Ms. Way and Ms. Heinemann (respectively). This dynamic duo collaborated and implemented the lessons from Miami’s Poetry Piano Slam Competition as an opportunity for the students to lead about poetry and express themselves with science, literary, and musical terms. ![]() The Poetry Piano Slam is a yearly local poetry slam competition where participants submit their poems, filled with musical terms and meaningful themes. How many years has it been around? Though, the Middle School teachers decided to give the event a twist and incorporate science and English into their students’ submissions. This resulted in our Middle School Poetry Slam Competition, with awards for two categories, Science and English. Ms. Keller, alongside the Phoenix Flyer staff, assisted and organized the event, hosting it on December 12, 2018 in room 204 during Middle School lunch hours. Sarah Zelaya, Javier Pujols, Nia Nelson, and Bianca Vucetich were the judges, giving their impressions of the participants with scores that sporadically left the audience in with uncertainty. Sam Isenberg was our MC for the event as well, getting people on stage and preparing the audience for the score results. Luke McLaughlin worked the music, DJing between poets, while Alberto Grand, photographer, and Divier DeLosReyes, videographer, documented the event. The Poetry Slam was definitely filled with several fabulous performances, one of which was the collaboration between two girls, Kennedy Glinn and Milena Rivero. Their poem reached the audience and judges with their social commentary about personal choice. Their presentation pleasantly added to their impactful poem as well, dazzling the judges and receiving one of the highest scores. Kennedy and Melina removing their ponchos for dramatic effect. At the conclusion, the teachers calculated the scores for all of the participants, divided by the two categories for the poems, and presented the audience with the results. The English category winners--Amelie Ise (1st), Kennedy & Milena (2nd) , and Mia (3rd)—and Science category winners--Brianna (1st), Amelie Morales (2nd), and Amy Munoz (3rd)—were giving their awards, concluding the Middle School Piano Poetry Slam. The winners from this competition also have their poems submitted to the actual Piano Slam, where they can win money and a professionally recorded performance. ![]() This event brought emotions and enthusiasm to the Middle School students, hoping that Ms. Way and Ms. Heinemann host the Middle School Poetry Piano Slam Competition once again in the upcoming years.
