By: Javier Gomez, Sophomore The Month of October was definitely eventful, filled with many festivities. October at iPrep is commonly associated with our United Way Drive, a nonprofit organization “focused on creating community-based and community-led solutions that strengthen the cornerstones for a good quality of life: education, financial stability and health.” This Month is full of fundraising events for our Drive, one of them our famous Hoop It Up. iPrep has a history of always succeeding, winning grand champion of the whole county and taking home several 1st place prizes for our donation efforts. The month begins with the competition among homerooms for United Way donations. Every Tuesday and Thursday, each homeroom representative gives his or her homeroom the task to collect money donations. If helping out for charity wasn’t enough, the reward for the most donations per student is a complimentary breakfast party to the winning homeroom. At the end of the month, Ms. Hauser’s homeroom won the complimentary breakfast party with $18.76 average per student. Even though Ms. Hauser’s homeroom won the competition, an honorable mention was awarded to Ms. Keller’s homeroom, who raised the most total amount of money, exactly $391.31. At the end of each October, the Student Government Association holds a spirit week to jumpstart our excitement before our annual Hoop It Up. This year, follow the Lower Academy (Elementary) as it commemorates the 10th anniversary of iPrep’s establishment by dedicating each day of the week to a different decade. To make it more exciting, the SGA hosted a competition every single day of spirit week to award the best dressed student; the winner won bragging rights and a giant sized Hershey’s chocolate bar. Some of our winners: Spirit Week was a success and Hoop It Up was no different. The Friday of the event, the sun was shining and the temperature was a cool 80 degrees. In order to raise funds, an entry fee was charged to each basketball team of $15 per team as well as tickets sold for the variety of food and games at the event. At 9:00am, the festivities began. First, it was the Hula Hoop Contest, then Egg Race, Pie Eating, Donut Line, Apple Bobbing, and finally the star of it all: Sponge Wars. The music was roaring and there was an abundance of excitement. Alongside the events, there was a Basketball tournament. Teams lined up and competed against each other until 2 teams stood remaining. The finale was a breeze of fresh air as the team, Gabriel Castro, Rafael Pujols, and Carlos Alaniz emerge as the winning team, which concluded the Highschool Hoop It Up, but the fun wasn’t over yet. This year we decided to try something new. As an effort to incorporate the middle schoolers more into our activities, The SGA Board decided to host the first ever Middle School Hoop It Up. The first time hosting two events on the same day was definitely challenging but worth the stress. SGA sponsor Mr.Sultz summarized the whole day: “It was a good time overall for the students who got to have a little fun, raising money for charity. and the greater good.” Overall the Month of October was a success but the real success and satisfaction was how much we helped a cause. The United Way Campaign raised exactly $9064.83. An amount that put our school over by 528% of the district’s goal. October was incredibly fun from the spirit week, to donations to our annual hoop it up, but let’s not forget the real reason we did all this. The moral of our hectic month was to show that our school supports the future for all kinds of people all over the US. United Way is a beautiful organization that supports many broad subjects such as education, income, and health. ”We come this beautiful school yet are surrounded with homelessness and poverty” stated by Mr. Sultz, who then goes onto explain that, “United Way provides a perfect safety net in which these donations and events that we host all help to eradicate homelessness and provide the needy with well enough resources.” In a world that values materialistic things, we are proud to say that we contributed to make our community better. Mr. Sultz explains that he values philanthropy and giving back, which are more rewarding than materialism, and he, through his support of The United Way, wishes to share those same morales with iPrep Students. As Vice President of the SGA, I believe that helping the community is something iPrep has always tried to accomplish, and that makes me one of the proudest students of my school and my community. Like Mr. Sultz says “ WE PREP!”
October was definitely a muse and a huge success for iPrep and United Way. The SGA wants to acknowledge everyone who donated and helped out this month. The end results wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for our incredible students. We want to also thank the PTSA and Ms. Sanders for donating all the food at Hoop It Up.
