By Sabrina Beguiristain and Kristie Rodriguez, Juniors During this month of May, students and faculty celebrate the work and dedication teachers display in our school, iPreparatory Academy. Educators hold an important role as exemplary individuals in society. They engage in spreading knowledge and inspiring the future generation to speak their truth, as well as create their purpose-- a lesson that greatly impacts students and ignites change. Here are just a few brief, yet thought provoking questions and answers from our teachers about their role in school as well as in life.
“Free light entertainment” - Ms. Gelber “Great party stories” - Ms. Philp “Being a teacher means to want to instill in students a desire for learning. Teachers listen to a student and they are more than a giver of knowledge. They also help students understand and live by what your teaching” - Ms. Araya
“Oh god….” - Mr. Arrison “I became a teacher as a form of community service. I received a scholarship from the Venezuelan government, and was unable to pay it back because of the political situation in Venezuela. I felt as though I still owed something, so I thought I would teach as a way to pay back the generosity that had made my education possible.” - Ms. Hauser “Well… I studied history and international relations in college, but I always wanted to do something in teaching. I always flirted with the idea of teaching, but never did it until hurricane Katrina because I realized there's a lot more to be doing in a day than working for commissions. Working with young people allows me to do that. I changed careers from banking to education. I’m always interested in teaching in training and I was not motivated by just making money. I like interacting with people and inviting them to a service that helped people. Education was the way to go. I thought about being an educator because I had aunts and uncles that were professional teachers. They always told be it was a great field, but you can't afford to be a teacher because it doesn't pay enough. So, I went out to the business world and worked in banking, but that wasn’t satisfying me so I gave teaching a try. 20+ years later it stills excites me that I can make a difference in students lives, and it confirms that i still can't afford to be a teacher.” - Mr. Sultz
“I hope student leave my class with a critical mind about events happening in the world” - Ms. Gelber “I hope they leave with a competence in self sufficiency, knowledge for the subject area and a lifelong love for learning” - Mr. Palladino “Self confidence, an appetite to learn more, an intrinsic desire to learn, a love for learning, and good memories” - Ms. Muller “I hope they leave the school with a sense of overall citizen empathy, hard work, and a sense of global issues that need to be addressed. I hope they leave with global awareness and become more aware of issues around the world. Life is about experiencing. Life is bigger than just one person. Life isn't about getting into prestigious schools; it's what you do that's important” - Ms. Fleri
