By Nacey Fernandez, Senior As many of you probably don’t know, November is Transgender Awareness Month. This week, November 13th through the 17th, was Transgender Awareness Week, and November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance. You’re probably asking yourself, “What are these observational days and celebratory weeks all about?” Well the purpose of Transgender Awareness Month is to help bring awareness and raise the visibility of transgender and gender non-conforming people and address the issues that the community faces. The Transgender Day of Remembrance was put in place in 1999 by a transgender woman and advocate Gwendolynn Ann Smith to honor the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. Remember that the LGBTQIA+ Community always accepts new allies and appreciates when more people join the movement to spread peace, love, unity, respect, and awareness.
