I wrote this poem “You are the garments of love” for a poetry assignment about comparing two things: one physical object to an abstract object. When I thought about the physical, I thought about clothing, something protective. And, when I thought about “protection,” I felt that love, too, can shield people. Enjoy reading my poem.
You are the garments of love
As I sit in your presence,
It all hits me hard.
I let your affection soak in
And all the love I used to disregard.
You are the garments of love
As I sit in your presence,
It all hits me hard.
I let your affection soak in
And all the love I used to disregard.
I realize that you are a hat
Because I wear you as protection
Protection from the heat,
and the sun that one looks at.
You guard me from the harmful UV rays from all those people
that intent to hurt me on my good days.
I carry you through my head all night
Thinking of your love and how you keep me feeling right.
You are not only a person but you are the sweater I wear on a chilly day
Protecting me from the cold and cruel words that, about me, people have to say.
You are my favorite, cozy sweater that reflects the color black
Because you shield me from the malicious things people speak behind my back.
My love you are the trousers I wear to important activities
The thing I look forward to wearing to all my festivities
The piece of cloth that hides the bruises and the scars
I had before we took each other’s separate memories and started to call it “ours”.
