When applying to college, especially through the Common Application, the essay is one of the keystone parts of a complete application and it's based on a list of prompts from which you can choose. However, there are some exceptions to the rule. Usually, colleges like the University of Miami require additional “supplemental” essays in addition to your Common Application essay. Wake Forest University, a school in North Carolina, requires 13 additional supplemental essays! What I am sharing with you today is my supplemental essay for the University of Miami. Hopefully, when you’re applying to college, you’re able to look back on this and use it as a guide. Good luck!

For most, water elicits the image of serenity, but to me it was a catalyst; an earthquake in the middle of the sea. Growing up I was not athletically inclined, in fact, I was often picked last for sports teams. The moment I made the decision to get involved in competitive swimming, the ripples became tidal waves. Not only was it physically challenging to complete the races, but it was also a mental battle to keep going and persevere. The early practices, the double sessions, and the conditioning were grueling, yet the innumerable competitive losses were the most exhausting. |
The early practices, the double sessions, and the conditioning were grueling, yet the innumerable competitive losses were the most exhausting. Regardless of how often I was the last one out of the pool, I was always the first one back on the diving block.
The elation I felt the first time I won a race is unforgettable. In the ensuing triumphant moments, I realized that all the adversity I overcame was worth it. They showed me what it truly meant to be a better athlete, and the victory felt even more gratifying because of it. My life would not be the same if I had never taken the first dive: I learned the true importance of tenacity and grit.
No matter what challenges I have faced, I know that with a decisive mentality, hard work, and the right plan, all of my goals are achievable.
The waves I’ve swam may have calmed, but the thrill lies in surmounting the next one.
