By N'agelie Lazo, Senior Laura, after transferring to iPrep in her sophomore year, has been integral to the iPrep family. Working with Ms. Pedroso, iPrep’s counselor, Laura instituted the Health Information Project (HIP) for underclassmen as well as the Fitness club. Laura has dedicated approximately 130 hours to implementing and organizing the program: attending workshops, teaching the Peer Health Educators (PHEs), presenting HIP Modules to our underclassmen, and serving as a mentor. Additionally, Laura has served as a Teacher’s Pet. She is in the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and Women of Tomorrow. What was your reaction to the nomination for Silver Knight ? Laura: It was a pleasant surprise that I was nominated for Silver Knight. Awesome! What spark the idea for your major community service project for HIP? Laura: I have always had an interest in self improvement and health. I wanted my peers to benefit from a program that would start the conversation about topics that we don’t talk about on a daily basis. Do you think your community service project sets yourself apart from other projects ? Laura: Every project is special and innovative. However, HIP & Fitness is able to stand out because PHEs are talking about mental health, reproductive health, alcohol and drugs, etc. Regardless of any obstacles, HIP & Fitness is able to break the stigma behind these topics and demonstrate that our youth need to be aware of themselves and the dangers they can face. If we aren’t healthy, we won’t be successful in our short and long term goals. Sounds good! Do you dedicate your volunteer time to other places as well ? Laura: HIP is set up so that majority of the PHEs’ volunteer time is the focused on the ninth graders. In addition, I have volunteered with young children and children of special needs. You’re stellar! Where do you see your project going in 5 years from now, do you think it will continue once you graduate ? Laura: HIP & Fitness consist primarily of underclassmen in which they are active members and board members, so I do think that HIP & Fitness will definitely continue. In five years, I hope HIP & Fitness continues start the conversation iPrep and our community. Super! Sounds like a plan! Thank you so much for taking time out for this interview! Best of Luck!
