By N'agelie Lazo, Senior Common Application. Coalition. Posse. Questbridge. FAFSA. These are the words seniors are greeted with as we return to school, instead of, “Hey, how was your summer?” As if it wasn’t enough with our parents nagging us everyday on trying to “build our resume for college.”
So, welcome back iPrepians-- it’s official we are seniors! As Ben Parker from the Spider Man Comics says, “With this great power, comes great responsibility”...this responsibility being college applications! Common Application and Coalition By now, ideally, we should all have our choices laid out on which schools we’re applying to, if not get to it! September is the month of crunch down time, which includes searching for scholarships, taking the SAT or ACT if you haven’t already, and so much more. For those who still have no idea what Common App or Coalition App is, they are application platforms that help prepare seniors and assist them during the admission process, as well as sending one huge application to all the schools you want to apply to. These platforms will be your way of applying to colleges, so make sure you fill out your profile in order to begin the admission process. FAFSA Another important application platform is FAFSA, which is Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This application determines a student’s eligibility for student financial Aid, which is based off of your parents income tax. Your FAFSA information should be available after applying, but this amount will be different based on the schools you have applied to. Financial Aid is separated into different categories of grants, loans, and etc. Make sure you know the difference between them and what exactly the school of your choice is offering in terms of money. Scholarships For any senior out there struggling to find scholarships, simply think of a place you like to eat at and more than likely they have a scholarship. For example, McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, KFC, and many more fast food chains offer scholarships with minimum requirements. Another helpful scholarship source is, Fast Web. It’s basically the Tinder version of scholarships giving the opportunity to swipe “left” or “right” if you’re interested or not in the scholarships. Fast Web also offers a mobile app that helps showcase scholarships that are geared towards your own personal guidelines based on the information you input in your profile. Don’t just stop at fast food chains, and Fast Web for scholarships, keep searching for more on your own, and make sure to keep an eye out on Edmodo for any scholarship opportunities Pedroso sends out. I’ll be checking in every month, so stay tuned for my cheesy humor and sub-par senior advice. Welcome to Senior Year! N’agelie Out.
