By: Deborah Augustin, Senior This year’s Club Rush was a success for many of the clubs at iPrep. Dozens of excited freshmen and sophomores flocked to Mu Alpha Theta’s cleverly decorated table and lined up to sign and receive a rainbow sticker at the Gay-Straight Alliance’s ( GSA’s) colorful booth to show their support for the club and pledge to come to the first meeting. School spirit was at an all-time high in the cafeteria as club presidents did everything they could to attract new members: the Robotics Club laid out their prototype robot and the Performing Arts Club’s created beautiful table decorations for all prospective members to see. stunning table decoration. There is a special emphasis on community service and engagement, and each club can fulfill a variety of interests from academic obligations to hobbies. For example, the National Honor Society (NHS), National English Honor Society (NEHS), and Student Government (SGA) give students a chance to get involved in their school at the community level. The NHS facilitates activities like the Blood Drive and opportunities to serve students and teachers through the Teacher’s Pet program. The NEHS places more focus on literary projects like the Hispanic Heritage Month Read-In and awareness activities like Poetry Month. Meanwhile, the award-winning SGA shows their annual support of the United Way drives in October by raking in money from the infamous, yearly Hoop It Up along with many other community service projects. The Honor societies are always active and have tons of projects that help students fulfill community service hours while also helping out the little ones in the PLC. Students who are more interested in finding a hobby or people with mutual interests should look no further than the Performing Arts Club, Robotics Club, Mu Alpha Theta, GSA, Code Art, Speech and Debate, or Model UN. There are even clubs for the middle school to join like the Inclusion Alliance, and Sports club. Interest clubs- Inclusion, Students with a passion for fashion, drama, and everything in between would feel right at home in the Performing Arts Club. For students who want to get a better look at the clubs they can choose from, Marco Prevedello, Student Government President, and Zoë Felfle, National English Honor Society President, explain what the student body could look forward to in the 2019-2020 school year: Interviewer: What is your main goal to accomplish as club President?
Marco: “I believe as the president of SGA it’s my responsibility to make the general school year fun and exciting, so my main goal is to raise iPrep spirit by really testing the limits of all events, expanding what people thought was possible and really showing everyone that iPrep can really be a school of spirit if we work together and create entertaining events.” Zoë: “As President, I organize different events the club holds and plan out what each meeting will cover. Along with that, I schedule both officer and general meetings, receive recommendations for different club activities, and make sure everything is running smoothly.” Interviewer: Is there anything that you’re excited to start working on now that you’re the President? Marco: “I’m super excited to be working on Homecoming because I think it might be better than even last years. I have an amazing board that really helps me with almost everything I do, so together we will really put our all into future events. Besides homecoming, we have more events happening and all the events have some sort of change that students may be surprised about.” Zoë: “I’m really excited to coordinate all of the English-based events the school holds along with generally making people more excited about English to begin with. I really want to expand the scope of activities the club participates in and I want to maybe create more events to do with poetry month and maybe some things based on prose.” Interviewer: What can the student body look forward to now that you’re president? Marco: “We are working really hard on homecoming, Hoop It Up, and other events. I’m also really excited about field day because we might do something totally new. Overall expect an overall feeling of novelty with every future event. Not a lot, I know, but all will be revealed in time.” Zoë: “Now that I’m President of the NEHS, the student body can look forward to more ‘bookish’ or English/writing-based events throughout the year along with perhaps a deeper connection between the Phoenix Flyer and the club. Furthermore, people can expect more interaction with the student body throughout the school year as the club organizes more and more events.”
