By Melina Kamaritis, Senior The International Day of Peace was instituted in 1981 by the United Nations to influence nations to promote a day to glorify peace no matter the differences in society. The goal is to eventually build a “Culture of Peace,” reduce war, and educate the public about peace around the world. It is crucial to have the ideology of peace as a goal for our community and the world. For more information, see the website for The International Day of Peace:
http://internationaldayofpeace.org TOGETHER is another campaign launched in September by the United Nations that further urges for the process of peace and unity in societies. This campaign is more specific to fight against xenophobia and discrimination towards refugees that leave their homes in search for a better life. Getting involved in these campaigns is becoming more and more important now because in the United States, government officials are trying to get rid of programs such as DACA, which is organized to protect immigrant youths from deportation if they were brought to America as children. In the light of this threat to DACA, it is important to teach and promote togetherness and get involved. To learn more about this campaign, see this link: http://www.un.org/en/events/peaceday/
