By Alivia Wenze, Senior November is National Adoption Awareness Month. It is a special month dedicated to information about adoption and to recognize people who have been adopted. The goal of Adoption month is to celebrate children going through adoption and to help children who currently wait in foster homes to be adopted. Some of the events cover how adoption has changed lives for the better.
According to Children’s Bureau, Adoption Awareness first started in 1976 with Governor Mike Dukakis of Massachusetts, who created Adoption Week. From there adoption awareness spread throughout the United States. Then, in 1984, President Reagan made Adoption Week nationwide. In the 1990’s President Bill Clinton decided to expand National Adoption Week into a month. As found in the Adoption Network website, during the month, communities, public and private organizations, and families participate in many ways:
Older children or teenagers have a harder time getting adopted because of their age. The Children’s Bureau, a part of the US Department of Health & Human Services, has a mission to improve the well-being of children and families. According to the Children’s Bureau, teenagers are “more likely to aged out of foster care without having strong support.” That is why it is essential that people advocate not only for small children but also older children in the foster care system. It is important that children of all ages in the foster care system that they have the love and support they need. According to the article “National Adoption Month,” this year, theme is “In Their Own Words: Lifting Up Youth Voices.” There should be opportunities for children to share their voice and their opinion about foster care. It is an effective way to educate people and improve child welfare and foster care policies. Children voices need to be heard to refine the system, so more children come out of foster care as successful individuals. It is crucial that people unite to learn and advocate for adoption and foster care. Adoption Awareness is essential all year long not only in November. The main idea is to spread awareness throughout the year about adoption and foster care. Children need all the love and support they can get because they are our future.
