It is leading cause of death in the United States, along with life threatening occurrences such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure, the list goes on. Meanwhile, individuals forget and neglect their heart health.
Every 34 seconds a person dies from a heart disease related event. Additionally, based on “Your Heart Health,” in Close the Gap: Health Equity for Life, women are more likely to die of heart disease than men. According to the health.clevelandclinic.org, women’s symptoms are much different than men; they experience subtle symptoms three to four weeks before a heart attack such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and neck pain. Furthermore, women are more likely to pass away before leaving the hospital after a heart attack. Not to mention, heart disease causes a staggering 610,000 deaths a year. Due to the statistics it is crucial to spread awareness on heart related disorders. Despite all the previous information, there are several ways to prevent these heart related injuries. According to “Toolkit: American Heart Month”, people should control their high blood pressure and cholesterol, prevent diabetes and obesity, and avoid smoking or people that smoke around you. A healthy diet should include whole foods that are low in trans-fat, saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars. Being active is also a big part of having a healthy heart, getting 20 to 40 minutes of physical activity 4 to 5 days a week can make a difference . There are also ways to make a difference in your community and bring awareness to National Heart month. Individuals can encourage their family members to make small changes, such as using spices to season their food instead of salt. Students can begin to encourage teachers and administrators to make physical activity a part of the school day. Another great way to spread awareness is by asking doctors and nurses to speak out on ways to prevent heart disease. Most people neglect their heart, which can be deadly. Following a heart healthy diet with a complete exercise regimen are prevention methods that will likely reduce the chances of cardiovascular issues.
