By Alberto Grand, Senior, and Nia Nelson, Junior According to the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau online, Shayne Benowitz, in her article “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Impact On Miami,” outlines that Miami was the first city in 1977 in the country to organize a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade with the leadership of Preston Marshall, a contemporary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement. The people, neighboring to a majority of commemorate his legacy. Annually, Miami presents the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade on the third Monday of January. This year, the parade is Monday, January 21st, and it runs along Northwest 54th Street, from Northwest 10th Avenue to 32nd Avenue, ending with a celebration at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park (6000 NW 32nd Ct.). This massive parade showcases floats, cars, local politicians, activist clubs, law enforcement, high school marching bands, cheerleaders, athletes, food, and music vendors. The parade also features a Caribbean twist, adding a carnival-style float and dancers that parade through the street. Besides the community members of the Liberty City neighborhood, people from all over Miami come out to enjoy the parade and honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s influence, activism, and fight for Civil Rights.
