Walking through this hall is nothing like another school. Kids sit on couches and listen to music. They aren’t skipping class; this is their class. iPreparatory Academy is a technology-based school that combines traditional lecture style classes with an independent learning experience. In a fast paced and changing world, is this the future of education? Some students seem to think so. Divier De Los Reyes, senior, explains, “One the one hand, we have all these classes, like coding, computer science, and robotics. These classes are really important for our future. But, on the other hand, we are so overwhelmed with our coursework that we miss out on opportunities to use our computers more often and discover coding that way. ” iPrep also helps its high school students develop professionally by providing an academic internship program in their junior and senior years. Ch’ade Delotte-Bennette, junior, talks about her experience, retelling, “It puts us in real life situations, where we think and act professionally in a professional setting. It [puts] us ahead of others when we actually do go out and work in these settings.” Additionally, the student’s classes their first two years of high school include: Leadership Development, Public Speaking, and Careers Class. Many students in today's world are aware of the competitive nature of college admissions as well as the job search later on in life. The students here are confident the skills they learned in their classes can be utilized later on, giving them an edge over everyone else. Lucile Calvo, junior, talks about her AP English Language and Composition class, explaining that “the class will help me how to analyze why authors write what they write to affect the audience, and it will help me become a better writer in general.” Furthermore, many students fear they will not be able to figure out what they want to do for the rest of their lives. This school anticipates that feeling and gives them resources to help. For example, students may take college classes at an MDC campus to gain credits, as well as help them learn more about a subject they may be interested in studying later on. Sharycad Diaz, sophomore, recounts, “We have college fairs to help us look at our options and a counselor that can help as well.” Overall, these students seem to be well prepared for their future career and educational paths by learning in such a unique environment.
